The Toowoomba Agricultural Centre was established in 1986 and is situated on approximately 8 hectares of land at 275 North Street. The Centre was created in response to widely held views that schools in the Toowoomba district whose economy is strongly linked to a diverse range of Agricultural enterprises, should be offering programs to students that reflects the valuable contribution Agriculture has in our society.

The Centre provides students with learning opportunities in Agricultural Science in a practical working farm environment.

  • Practical component for Senior Agricultural Science courses offered in High Schools.
  • Support High School academic programs and pathways to tertiary study
  • Vocational education and training opportunities for students in year 10-12.
  • Provide opportunities for Early and Middle Phase students to gain experience in and learn through Agriculture.
  • Point of contact and reference for teachers across the curriculum.

"Our rural sector faces challenges such as an aging workforce, skills shortages, drought, water management impacting on productivity, climate change, biosecurity threats and the effects of the global economic crisis. It's through the development of industry-school projects that we can encourage young people to play a part in the agribusiness industry, seeking solutions to these challenges and therefore being able to make a world of difference." (DET Minister Geoff Wilson 2009)

In delivering an Agricultural curriculum, the Centre has established a wide range of partnerships to support learning. These range from local industries, community organisations, Tertiary educators, local producers, media etc. examples are:- QDPI&F, DNR&M, Landcare, Universities – UQ Gatton, St Lucia, USQ, TAFE, Elders, Ridley Agriproducts, AgAware, AgForce, Queensland Country Life, Breed Societies etc.

The Centre is the responsibility of the Principal of Toowoomba State High School.

The curriculum and day to day operations are managed by a Head of Department who leads a team of staff in the effective delivery of learning programs and efficient administration of its resources.

The Centre develops its own Annual Operation Plan to set goals and actions specific to the operation of the Centre. This is approved by the TSHS P&C and School Council. Stakeholder surveys will be completed annually and/or exit. An annual stakeholder meeting provides opportunities for all to discuss and recommend future priorities.

Schools using the Ag Centre must sign a usage agreement that details responsibilities for OHSW issues, curriculum delivery and behaviour management, charges and fees, transport and other negotiated elements. All users must be familiar with the Centre's operation manual.
